General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is performed for the safety of our patients for most surgical and dental procedures. Prior to general anesthesia, pre-surgical examinations and blood work +/- further diagnostics (radiographs) are recommended by the veterinarian to evaluate the risk associated with anesthesia and determine the safest protocols to be performed.

On the day of a procedure, a physical examination is performed by the veterinarian. Sedative medications are administered to allow patients to become relaxed. Then, intravenous medications are administered to allow for an endotracheal tube to be placed down the trachea (main airway of the body) which allows for oxygen and anesthesia to be delivered to the patient throughout the procedure. After the procedure is complete, anesthesia is turned off and the endotracheal tube is removed and the patient is monitored carefully by staff until it is deemed safe for the patient to be discharged to family.
